El 17 de septiembre a las 18, 15 se inaugura en el Centro Español Rey Juan Carlos I (NYU) la muestra:




La Colonia: Los inmigrantes españoles en Nueva York, 1898-1945 Una exposición fotográfica comisariada por el profesor James Fernández. Inauguración de la exposición, con unas palabras del comisario James D. Fernández, y por algunos de los propietarios de las fotografías. En las primeras décadas del siglo XX, Nueva York experimentó una importante afluencia de inmigrantes de clase trabajadora de España. En comparación con muchos otros grupos nacionales de Europa, la colonia española en Nueva York era relativamente pequeño. Pero el estallido de la Guerra Civil Española en 1936 trajo mayor visibilidad a los españoles de Nueva York, ya que la ciudad se movilizó en respuesta a la guerra de España. Usando fotos de los álbumes familiares de estos inmigrantes y sus descendientes, esta exposición será una crónica de la historia de este episodio olvidado del español y la historia de EE.UU..
Esta exposición en KJCC es parte de Nueva York, una innovadora exposición interpretativa que explora por vez primera los lazos históricos significativos entre Nueva York y el mundo de habla española, organizado por la Sociedad Histórica de Nueva York y El Museo del Barrio a partir de septiembre 2010 y enero de 2011.

Antonio Muñoz Molina brindará un curso en New York

Since 1988 Antonio Muñoz Molina has been a freelance writer, the author of more than twenty books, including novels, essays, memoirs and short story collections, and a regular contributor to Spain’s leading newspapers, especially El Pais, where he has kept a regular column on cultural issues for more than 10 years. He has contributed op ed articles also to The New York Times, Il Corriere della Sera, Le Nouvel Observateur, etc. He currently writes a monthly column for the magazine Muy Interesante (on topics related to science and the humanities), as well as musical reviews for Scherzo (Spain).
His books include Beatus Ille (1986; Icaro Prize), El invierno en Lisboa (1987; National Book Award and National Critics Book Award, 1988), Beltenebros (1989), El jinete polaco (1991; Planeta Prize and National Book Award), Plenilunio (1997; Prix Fémina Étranger, 1998), Sefarad (2001; Prix Alberto Benveniste, Paris-Sorbonne; Pen Translation award 2004), Ventanas de Manhattan (2004), El viento de la Luna (2006), and La noche de los tiempos (2009). Since 1987, his books have been regularly translated into more than fifteen languages throughout Europe, America and the Middle East. From 2004 to 2006 Muñoz Molina was the executive director of the Cervantes Institute in New York. He has taught as a visiting professor or writer in residence at the University of Virginia (1993), The City University of New York (2001, 2002), and Bard College (2006).
Muñoz Molina will be teaching a course within the MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish and will give the following public lectures:

• Spain, circa 1977: Learning to write novels while exploring freedom, a memoir of his learning process as a writer throughout the arrival of democracy in Spain

Proyectarán films de Almodóvar en la NYU

Thirty-five years and seventeen critically acclaimed full-length features after producing his first short film, Pedro Almodóvar arguably remains the most notable Hispanic director, and one of the most successful filmmakers in the world. Despite his renown for films such as Todo sobre mi madre (All About my Mother, Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film), Hable con ella (Talk to Her, Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) and his recent films La mala educación (Bad Education) and Volver (The Return), Almodóvar’s early films and shorts remain unknown to many. In celebration of his latest work, Los abrazos rotos (Broken Embraces), his most high-budgeted film to date, this two-day festival will look back to when it all began and showcase the Almodóvar of the late 1970s and 1980s’ so-called Movida Madrileña. This All About Almodóvar Mini-Film Festival, whose title acknowledges the most recent anthology of criticism on his work, includes screenings of the director’s first films, some of his overlooked shorts, as well as talks by Almodóvar specialists and Movida scholars.
